The rectory of the parish church of St. Peter, Astley was the birth place of Frances Ridley Havergal, the 19th century poet and hymn writer, (Take my life and let it be), whose tomb is situated at the west end of the church yard. The church is a grade one listed building, constructed from sandstone and dating back some 900 years. The exterior of the church has some interesting architectural features, and the impressive Norman style chancel arch, ancient sandstone font and the extremely impressive Tudor styled tombs of the Blounts, (local manorial lords), make the interior of the church well worth a visit. The church was renovated in the early 20th century when a new stained glass east window was installed, the south windows repositioned and finally four years ago a modern stained glass window was incorporated.
